Private riverside retreat | Mpumalanga, South Africa
Tiger Moth on the River
A secluded country stay for families and friends who want water, fire, mountain air, and enough room to stretch out. Real photographs now lead the story: river swims, late braais, hot-tub sunsets, and a house built for slow weekends.
What makes it special
The house, the river, and the room to settle in.
Tiger Moth pairs a dramatic reserve setting with the details that make group stays easy: generous gathering spaces, flexible sleeping, outdoor cooking, and direct access to a slower pace.
Riverside downtime
Swim in the river, cool off in natural pools, cast a line, or simply sit close enough to hear the water moving below the house.
Fire-led evenings
The hot tub, boma-style braai area, clay pizza oven, and indoor fireplace turn the house into an all-day hangout after sunset.
Room for mixed groups
Two en-suite king rooms, a twin room, and a bunk room make it easy to host extended family, kids, and friends under one roof.
Reserve access built in
Hike, bike, birdwatch, fish, or head to the lodge for the pub, restaurant, and pool without giving up the privacy of the estate.
The feel of the place
A proper switch-off, not just a change of address.
The appeal here is contrast: dramatic cliffs and open grassland outside, relaxed family living inside. Limited signal and no in-house wifi make the stay feel refreshingly off-grid, while the nearby lodge keeps practical extras within reach.
- Morning Walk the river, take coffee with a full valley view, or head out on a ride.
- Afternoon Choose between swimming, fishing, birding, hiking, or lunch on the estate.
- Night Light the fire, cook outdoors, soak in the tub, and let the stars take over.
Inside the house
Built for ten, without feeling packed.
The layout gives adults privacy and kids flexibility. Two bedrooms are en-suite with king beds, another room has twin singles, and the fourth is a bunk room that works especially well for younger guests.
Photo gallery
Every key image now lives on its own page too.
The homepage now uses the real property photography, and the full set is available on a dedicated gallery page so guests can browse the house, river, and reserve in more detail.
Before you go
The practical side of disappearing for a few days.
Tiger Moth is set in Emakhazeni Local Municipality, between Carolina and Machadodorp, inside the Komati Gorge Lodge and Wildlife Reserve. The last stretch is part of the experience: a drive into open country and away from the everyday pace.
Expect roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from Sandton or Johannesburg, followed by about 8 km on a good dirt road.
There is no wifi at the house and cellphone signal is limited. Guest wifi is available at the lodge, around ten minutes away.
The reserve includes a lodge with a restaurant, pub, and pool, plus support for self check-in and arranging activities.
